Coincidence in Literature

Shakespeare in the Bible ?
Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 and died on April 23, 1616. Most of Shakespeare is known to us through the first folio published in 1623. 23+23=46. Shakespeare was 46 years old in the year 1610 (1+6+1+0=8, 8=2³), the year the King James Bible was published. Psalm 46 in that translation has as its 46th word "shake" while the 46th word from the end is "spear."   {See The Bible Code }

Shakespeare and Cervantes {Considered his equal if not literary superior during their lives} both died on April 23rd {St. Georges Day - A Holiday in UK}

 The Shakespeare coincidence may quite possibly be explained by one of English Histories most profound unexplained mysteries. Many theories have been put forth arguing that someone other than William Shakespeare wrote the plays and poems published under his name. And one favored candidate as the Ghost writer is Francis Bacon. The printing of the King James Bible , sponsored by King James I of England also involved Bacon. Bacon, like other queer geniuses before him, most notably DaVinci ,was a perverted genius and is known to have been involved in producing the King James version of the Bible. It is quite possible that the coincidence of Psalm 46 is an engineered coincidence.

"The 1611 King James Bible is ornamented with Bacon's symbols and in my own special copy of the record edition, also dated 1611, these symbols are Rosicrucianly marked to call the attention of the initiated to them and to tell them that the 1611 Bible is without possibility of doubt, one of Bacon's books.....When Bacon was born, English as a literary language did not exist, but once he died he had succeeded in making the English language the noblest vehicle of thought ever possessed by mankind. This he accomplished merely by his Bible and his Shakespeare." --Edwin D. Lawrence author of Bacon is Shakespeare and The Shakespeare Myth from a lecture October 9, 1912

Jonathan Swift in  Gulliver's Travels [1726], makes reference to two  moons of Mars.

The astronomers on the flying island of Laputia, have
"... discovered two lesser stars, or satellites, which revolve around Mars, whereof the innermost is distant from the center of the primary exactly three of his diameters, and the outermost five: the former revolves in the space of ten hours, and the latter in twenty-one and a half. "

It has been suggested and is somewhat conceivable that Swift may have gotten this idea from The astronomer Johannes Kepler who wrote that since "Jupiter had four known moons and Earth had one, it was only natural that Mars should have two." . A Short story by Voltaire in 1750 "Micromegas ", about an alien visitor to Earth, also refers to the two moons of Mars. Two craters on Deimos are named Swift and Voltaire.

Edgar Allen Poe In 1883  published a book The Arthur Gordon Pym of Naugatuck at one point in this novel 4 men are adrift in a boat, and they kill and eat the cabin boy Richard Parker --40 years later four men are adrift in a boat and they kill and eat the cabin boy Richard Parker to survive.   Tales of Edgar Allen Poe"There are few persons, even among the calmest thinkers, who have not occasionally been startled into a vague yet thrilling half-credence in the supernatural, by coincidences of so seemingly marvelous a character that, as mere coincidences, the intellect has been unable to receive them."-- Edgar Allen Poe, The Viking Portable Poe

It is also claimed that in a work of prose by Edgar Allen Poe entitled "Eureka"  that he anticipated the big bang theory of the Universe origin.

Titanic Coincidences

Morgan Robertson In 1898  wrote Futility,  It described the maiden voyage of a transatlantic luxury liner named the Titan. Although it was touted as being unsinkable, it strikes an iceberg and sinks with much loss of life.  In 1912 the Titanic, a transatlantic luxury liner widely touted as unsinkable strikes an iceberg and sinks with great loss of life on her maiden voyage.

Morgan Robertson later wrote a book, Beyond the Spectrum, that described a future war fought with aircraft that carried "sun bombs". Incredibly powerful, one bomb could destroy a city, erupting in a flash of light that blinds all who look at it. The war begins in December, started by the Japanese with a sneak attack on Hawaii.

---One of the victims onboard the Titanic was William T Stead, a onetime assistant editor for the Pall Mall Gazette, and founder of a periodical known as the Review of reviews. In 1892 he wrote an article about a fictional Atlantic voyage aboard a White star liner (The Titanic was a White star liner} which sank with much loss of life after striking an iceberg.

---Months after the Titanic sank, a tramp steamer was traveling through the foggy Atlantic with only a young boy on watch. It came into his head that it had been thereabouts that the Titanic had sunk, and he was suddenly terrified by the thought of the name of his ship - the Titanian. Panic-stricken, he sounded the warning. The ship stopped, just in time: a huge iceberg loomed out of the fog directly in their path. The Titanian was saved.

Two years after the Titanic sank, another British-flagged express liner, registered in Liverpool sank. After both ships sank , British Admiralty judge Lord Mersey presided over investigations into the causes of the disasters. At both inquiries Butler Aspinall, KC, appeared as counsel.

The World Set Free is a novel published in 1914 by H. G. Wells. is noteworthy for its depiction of what he referred to as "atomic bombs"  physicist Leo Szilard read the book in 1932, conceived of the idea of nuclear chain reaction in 1933, and filed for patents on it in 1934.

Jules Verne Writing Paris in the Twentieth Century,long before the Eiffel Tower was even thought of, describes 20th Century Paris as having a skyline dominated by a large metallic tower. Technology and business dominate Parisian life, and women are “Americanized” as is the language, which is filled with adapted American words. The horses that jammed Parisian streets are gone, replaced by metal vehicles . Average people sit in offices and work at computing machines, and send paperwork to one another by facsimile machines. He even uses the word "facsimile".

In a 1972 novel, James Rusk published a pornographic work titled Black abductor, the story was incredibly similar to the abduction of heiress Patricia Hearst in 1974 that an investigation was conducted by the FBI , and Rusk was interrogated to determine if he was involved in the Kidnapping. The Author was vindicated- just a coincidence?

In a 1973 novel,  Arthur C. Clarke wrote: "At 0940 GMT on the morning of September 11 in the exceptionally beautiful summer of the year 2077, most of the inhabitants of Europe saw a dazzling fireball.... Somewhere above Austria it began to disintegrate.... The cities of Padua and Verona were wiped from the face of the earth, and the last glories of Venice sank forever..."

The British actor Anthony Hopkins [who shot to fame as Hannibal Lecter] was delighted to hear that he had landed a leading role in a film based on the book The Girl From Petrovka by George Feifer. A few days after signing the contract, Hopkins travelled to London to buy a copy of the book. He tried several bookshops, but there wasn't one to be had. Waiting at Leicester Square underground for his train home, he noticed a book apparently discarded on a bench. Incredibly, it was The Girl From Petrovka. That in itself would have been coincidence enough but in fact it was merely the beginning of an extraordinary chain of events. Two years later, in the middle of filming in Vienna, Hopkins was visited by George Feifer, the author. Feifer mentioned that he did not have a copy of his own book. He had lent the last one - containing his own annotations - to a friend who had lost it somewhere in London. With mounting astonishment, Hopkins handed Feifer the book he had found. 'Is this the one?' he asked, 'with the notes scribbled in the margins?' It was the same book.

When Norman Mailer began his novel Barbary Shore, there was no plan to have a Russian spy as a character. As he worked on it, he introduced a Russian spy in the U.S. as a minor character. As the work progressed, the spy became the dominant character in the novel. After the novel was completed, the U.S. Immigration Service arrested a man who lived just one floor above Mailer in the same apartment building. He was Colonel Rudolf Abel, alleged to be the top Russian spy working in the U.S. at that time.

Miscellaneous Coincidence

The pilot episode of The Lone Gunmen involved the hijacking of a commercial flight and crashing it into the World Trade Center , the plot of the March 4, 2001 pilot episode of the series depicts a secret U.S. government agency plotting to crash a Boeing 727 headed for Boston into the World Trade Center via remote control for the purpose of increasing the military defense budget and blaming the attack on foreign "tin-pot dictators" who are "begging to be smart-bombed." This episode aired in Australia, on August 30, less than two weeks before the 9/11 attacks .

William Cowper ---In an epic poem the 19th Century Poet foretold the fall of the Bastille

Arthur Law In 1885 this Playwright wrote a play about shipwreck sole-survivor "Robert Golding" from a ship named the Caroline. A few days after the Plays first showing a ship named the Caroline sank, the sole survivor - Robert Golding.

In 1979, the German magazine - Das Besteran - ran a  writing competition. Readers sent in unusual stories, but they had to be based on true incidents. The winner, Walter Kellner of Munich, had his story published . He wrote about a time when he was flying a Cessna 421 between Sardinia and Sicily. He encountered engine trouble at sea, landed in the water, spent some time in an emergency dinghy and was then rescued. This story was spotted by an Austrian, also named Walter Kellner, who said that the German Kellner had plagiarized the story. The Austrian Kellner said that he had flown a Cessna 421 over the same sea, experienced engine trouble and was forced to land in Sardinia. It was essentially the same story, with a slightly different ending. The magazine checked both stories, and both turned out to be true, even though they were nearly identical. Moral of the story is - if your name is Walter Kellner - don't fly a Cessna near Sardinia ?

Early in 1938, playwright A. J. Talbot published a one-act comedy, 'Chez Boguskovksy, in which a man named Boguskovksy steals a painting from the Louvre in Paris. On August 15, 1939, a painting was stolen from the Louvre. The name of the thief: Boguskovksy.
